Battambang is the capital city of Battambang province in north western Cambodia. The city is considered the commercial hub for Cambodia's northwest, connecting the region to Phnom Penh and Thailand. Battambang municipality covers an area of 293 km2, consisting of urban, peri-urban and rural areas, with an estimated population of 197,000. 98% of the population uses onsite sanitation systems, while the excreta from around 1% of the residents ends up at a wastewater treatment plant. For Battambang, 62% of the excreta is managed safely, with around 38% considered unsafely managed. This SFD report was prepared by WaterAid and commissioned by GIZ GmbH.
